I was looking at Ryan Lang stuff, I just wanted to apply some of the techniques he uses onto a sphere real quick. A really fun exercise. I used soft brushes, and then I used a hard brush and a texture brush for the highlight. For the second one, I adjusted the opacity of my layers.
It is really economical (quick) and looks really in control when you use a soft brush for the major parts, and then use a textured brush a places like highlights to show the object having texture. In this way you can show texture without putting too much detail, and aftwerwards, you can put on texture overlays for additional detail if needed!
